    Safety and Risk Services' (SRS) mission is to collaborate with all campus constituents (students, staff, faculty, and visitors) and the surrounding community, to safeguard life and health and mitigate threats to the university's core mission of academic excellence, research, and public service. Safety and Risk Services comprises Emergency Management and Continuity, Environmental Health and Safety, Campus Mapping, Risk & Insurance, and the University of Oregon Police Department. SRS fulfills its mission by providing a variety of professional services, technical assistance, training, and regulatory oversight. The total Safety and Risk Services portfolio includes around 125 employees and a current annual operating budget of approximately $15 million.

    Safety and Risk Services also supports, and the Chief Resilience Officer (CRO) leads, the University's strategic Enterprise Risk Management and Organizational Resilience Framework to cultivate leadership, staff engagement, effective partnerships, situational awareness, innovation, and proactive problem solving to create a more resilient and agile university.

Position Summary
    The Laboratory Safety Manager (LSM) reports to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at the University of Oregon. The Laboratory Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating and maintaining a comprehensive laboratory safety program at the University of Oregon (UO). This is accomplished by performing the following duties personally, through subordinate staff, and by building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with broad and diverse groups of campus and community partners. The Laboratory Safety Manager works closely with the office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, and provides regular reports on the state of compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines. The Laboratory Safety Manager also serves as a campus response coordinator on the EHS Duty Administrator Team. Additionally, as Biosafety Officer (BSO), the incumbent provides the University with professional expertise and oversight in the evaluation and control of biological hazards.

    Interactions and contacts occur daily with the campus community in the course of performing work and responding to emergencies.

    Position works as a member of a team while frequently performing tasks independently. Decisions may be made about the best method and materials necessary to perform a particular task. They may also include setting priorities, assessing customer needs and responding to those needs.

    Work is reviewed regularly by the supervisor to ensure it is performed efficiently, safely, and meets both expectations and applicable requirements. A performance appraisal is conducted annually.

    This unit may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times. This position participates in a 24/7 on-call response rotation to coordinate and perform EHS function and related duties; call schedule is typically 1 week per 5 week period. Minimum Requirements
    --- Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology or other related field from an accredited college or university OR three years of experience in the fields of biological safety and laboratory safety.
    --- Experience performing practices pertaining to Biosafety, Laboratory Safety, and Environmental Health and Safety in general.
    --- Experience monitoring and following Federal and State regulations or guidelines pertaining to recombinant DNA, biological agents and biomedical research.
    --- Experience developing and presenting educational programs and/or workshops. Professional Competencies
    --- Ability to interpret and apply regulatory standards.
    --- Advanced skills in problem-solving operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
    --- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work both effectively and cooperatively with a wide range of people in a diverse community. Preferred Qualifications
    --- Advanced degree (M.S.; Ph.D. preferred) in microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology or other related field from an accredited college or university.
    --- Five years of experience as a Biosafety Officer.
    --- Five years of experience as a Laboratory Safety Officer.
    --- Experience working effectively in higher education or other complex organization.
    --- Professional certification in applicable professional field (CHMM, CSP, RBSP, etc.).
