Position Summary: The Associate R&D UX/UI Specialist/Visual Designer will work in a cross-functional team of researchers and developers to (a) understand target market and user segments and how to identify users from both (b) engage with users in interviews, observations, focus groups and other data collection activities to understand their needs and lead the UI/UX aspects of user experience research and associated interface design, wireframing, and documentation for engaging, interactive, and innovative capabilities, (c) serve as design leads for small interdisciplinary agile teams focused on producing user-informed functional prototypes that could be tested in target markets, and (d) collaborate with both internal and external colleagues and consultants to ensure on-time completion of project goals. Responsibilities: Responsible for assisting in designing and/or conducting user research for assessment and learning applications that are visually engaging, accessible, and easy to use Working closely with senior UX/UI colleagues, the applicant will contribute to design and/or user research for learning and assessment prototypes that conform to ETS Labs technical and architectural standards. Assist in best practice activities for eliciting, synthesizing, and representing user, team, and client needs as well as best practices for translating requirements into visually engaging, accessible, and highly usable designs. Assist in researching and designing sophisticated prototypes for new learning and/or assessment ideas. These prototypes should be designed and researched to ensure that they accurately implement appropriate learning/assessment principles balanced with an aesthetically pleasing and easy to use interface. Assist with executing user centered methods (e.g., iterative usability) that will measurably improve designs and/or problem solution fit. Keep abreast of trends and latest research in human computer interaction, user research, and / or design as well as usability guidelines. Assist in the preparation of cost/resource estimates relating to the development of assessment prototypes and learning applications Adhere to ethical standards and comply with the laws and regulations applicable to the job function Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses: A Bachelor---s degree or higher in technology-related field of study (computer science, information technology, educational technology, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), user design, or web/graphic design) or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, experience, certification can be acquired is required. Additional coursework in cognitive science, computer science, user design is desirable. Relevant Years of Experience: One (1) to two (2) years of professional experience in assisting in the design/research for technology-based user experiences is required. Previous experience working with programmers is desirable, as is prior experience working with teams to provide or ensure that design supports usability and / or visual appeal of end product. Previous experience in assisting in use/client requirements-gathering sessions and usability testing is required. Preferred skills include design presentations and some experience in storyboarding, prototyping, and graphic design. 1-2 years of experience working in learning/assessment, educational research, or educational fields is desirable. For candidates for an accessibility-related position, strongly preferred are candidates with knowledge in assistive technologies across multiple platforms, including screen readers, magnification, and read aloud tools. Other Requirements: A portfolio review will be conducted as part of the interview process. Candidates will be asked to articulate complex sequences of user interactions and design decisions along with a critique of their own work. Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and experience working with internal and external customers are required. Well-developed organizational skills, strong technical skills and a willingness/adeptness with regards to learning new technology are required. Experience in education research and/or assessment development and up-to-date knowledge of the industry, trends, and standard practices are preferred. Facility with project management, work organization, and Microsoft Office tools is preferred. Strong understanding of the requirements of each stage within the digital design product/assessment development process as well as the understanding of the principles, conventions, terminology and tools for stages in the development process is preferred. Demonstrating the ability to adapt previous work experiences and gain knowledge from others and successfully provide recommendations or a course of action in new and ambiguous situations is desirable. Being able to adapt to changes to policies and processes and apply new learnings in an expected or reasonable time frame is desirable. Being able to work effectively in a cross-functional team setting and take an active role in contributing to team discussions and decisions across a wide range of domains, and collaborate well with research scientists, assessment specialists, other designers, and / or programmers.
