Department Summary The Department of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies is a small academic unit at the University of Oregon that has continued to grow in size since the major was first offered in Fall, 1997. It also includes the Native American Studies Program which offers its own minor. The staff presently consists of 10 faculty members, including one department head, nine faculty at 1.0 FTE, and one faculty at .60 FTE. Classified staff consists of one full-time Office Coordinator (Administrative Program Assistant) in addition to this position. There are also several graduate employees, generally 1-2 non-tenure track faculty per academic year and generally 1-3 work-study positions. Interdisciplinary in nature, the department analyzes how race, ethnicity, and coloniality affect all sectors of US society. The department focuses on the history, literature, culture, philosophies, and interrelationships of race, ethnicity, and colonization in the United States. Position Summary The Departmental Assistant serves in several clerical capacities within the Department of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies. These roles include: assisting the Office Coordinator in office reception, processing invoices, and providing backup when the Office Coordinator is not available; coordinating IRES undergraduate students while working with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to track student files and clear students for degrees and assess student degree audit reports and prep them for the Director of Undergraduate Studies. This position will be responsible for creating new tracking processes that interface with, and accommodate for, the new Tykeson advising model. They will coordinate events, provide travel assistance to faculty, develop and coordinate an outreach program for alumni and donors, and develop and manage web platforms. This position takes direction from the Office Coordinator and is supervised by the Department Head. The person in this position works as a member of a team while frequently performing tasks independently. They work closely with faculty, students and staff. They are responsible for decisions about the best methods and materials necessary to perform particular tasks. They also set priorities, assess department, faculty and student needs and respond to those needs. Minimum Requirements Two years of general clerical experience. One year of which includes typing, word processing, or other experience generating documents; OR An Associate's degree in Office Occupations or Office Technology; OR Graduation from a private school of business with a Certificate in Office Occupations or Office Technology AND one year of general clerical experience. College courses in Office Occupations or Office Technology will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Professional Competencies Ability to perform duties in a way that advances and supports the mission of the Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies Department and the university. Willingness to take initiative and work independently while maintaining a spirit of collaboration with staff and faculty. Ability to maintain a welcoming environment for diverse students, faculty and community members. Ability to successfully negotiate a work environment that at times has multiple deadlines and varied tasks. Excellent attention to detail on all platforms (business writing, data entry, web pages, etc.). Proficient with Microsoft products or similar software. Preferred Qualifications Work experience in higher education. Experience using web development software. Experience using graphic design skills to create posters for department events.
