Department Summary

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO program funded at 151 institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico by the US Department of Education. It is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.

McNair participants are either first-generation college students with financial need, or members of a group that is traditionally underrepresented and have demonstrated strong academic potential. The goal of the McNair Scholars Program is to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented segments of society.

Position Summary

The Director of the McNair Scholars is responsible for ensuring that all services are delivered as outlined in the Department of Education funded grant proposal and for the effective daily coordination and delivery of McNair services. The Director will provide leadership and oversight of the program, including day-to-day operations, mentorship of students, and acting as a campus liaison to increase awareness of the McNair Scholars program goals and diverse experiences of participants. The Director will also work to align the McNair program with other undergraduate research programs at UO (specifically the Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement [CURE] within UESS).

The McNair Director recruits, selects, provides individual consultation, and leads group activities and teaches a credit-bearing, four-term sequence of McNair seminars to increase the number of McNair participants applying to doctoral programs. In addition, the Director enhances the visibility of the McNair Program, showcases student research, and recognizes the contributions of faculty mentors.

The McNair Director reports to the Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Research and will directly supervise the McNair Program Coordinator. The Director must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, accessible, and professional atmosphere in the office. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the demonstrated ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
