These are primarily engine based positions that generally work from June through October; however, the duration of the season and job conditions vary by location. Interviews are expected to be completed by May; however, application reviews may begin at any time. For best consideration, apply as soon as possible.Veneta Office: The Western Lane District fills20 seasonal positions for wildland firefighters each summer in Veneta. These firefighters respond to wildland fires in western Lane County and northern Douglas County. Each day employees report to the office in Veneta at the main district headquarters.Florence Office: In Florence, the district fills6 seasonal positions for wildland firefighters each summer. These firefighters respond to wildland fires in western Lane County and northern Douglas County. Click HereHousing InformationVeneta: Western Lane District has limited housing for some of our seasonal employees; however, Veneta is located just 12 miles west of Eugene, where many of our firefighters are able to find housing.Florence: The Florence Office does not have housing for our seasonal employees.WHAT WILL YOU DOYou will perform a wide variety of manual tasks in the areas of forest fire prevention, pre-suppression, and fire suppression.You will serve as a crew leader, member, or engineer operator for Type 4 and Type 6 engines. You will be responsible for engine/crew readiness of an assigned crew, coordinating and performing physical labor necessary to suppress and extinguish wildfire, and complete routine building and ground maintenance.For a complete list of duties and working conditions for these opportunities, please click here.The Department's highest priority work is a forest fire emergency, this position may be utilized during those emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways. That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or at the Salem headquarters. It also may be in providing backup to fill in for another position that is being used in direct aid to the emergency, or it may be in performing an essential function in some capacity either within this Program or elsewhere in Salem or in the field.WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FORCandidates who demonstrate skills, abilities and/or experience in the following:2 years of Wildland firefighting experience. (One 3-6 month seasonis equivalent to one year of experience).Must be 18 years of age by time of hire.Successful applicants must take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level as a condition of hire.Please click on this link for information about the Work Capacity Test.May be required toobtain the ClassC or higherWarden certification within the trial service period.Operating Structural and/or Wildland Fire Engines.Operating manual or split-shift transmissions.Conducting resource readiness of equipment and personnel.Use of maps, compasses and GPS.Use of hand tools and operating motorized equipment commonly used for wildland fire.Effective conflict resolution.Understands and implements safe work practices.Maintains situational awareness at all times.Communicates with both internal and external customers includingcooperators, landowners, publicand fire crews.Demonstrates decision making capabilities.Works collaboratively as a member of a team.Ability to work independentlyunder general supervision.Demonstrates leadership skills by taking initiative.Ability to perform in high stress, fast paced emergency situations.Completesaccurate reports in a timely manner with attention to detail under minimal guidance.Ability to problem solve with minimal guidance.Maintains an adequate level of fitness to perform assigned duties.
