Job Summary

The Zendesk Email Platform team is looking for a Staff Software Engineer with experience building and maintaining large-scale SAAS systems. We send and receive millions of emails a day and our customers rely on us to keep email processing and notification sending fast and free of errors. You are a phenomenal fit if you have deep technical experience, experience working on large-scale systems, and technology leadership skills.

What you'll be doing

  • Write, test, and maintain code used by millions of people worldwide

  • Continually improve your and your colleagues' code through peer review and pair programming and mentor and support members of your team

  • Help define observability and reliability standards for our systems

  • Craft and improve documentation for the team and throughout Zendesk

  • Partner with stakeholders and collaborators across the product development organization

  • Estimate and prioritize work based on trade-offs and collaboration with business partners, ensuring our future as well as current needs are addressed

  • Enforce engineering best practices when designing, building and maintaining our systems

What you bring to the role

Required:

  • A love for learning and applying your knowledge: supporting your team to increase its collective expertise.

  • A good appreciation of application development and testing, refactoring and agile practices.

  • Beautifully clean, efficient and maintainable code and are committed to maintaining and improving our high availability and performance standards.

  • Demonstrable experience with coding large-scale backend code in a dynamic language like Ruby or Javascript

  • An understanding of front-end technologies (React/Redux, CSS frameworks a plus)

  • Experience with relational and key-value data stores and messaging & queueing systems (Kafka, SQS)

  • Experience with system design at scale

Preferred:

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure technologies - we use AWS - infrastructure as code, Kubernetes, etc.

  • Familiarity with email standards (and how they're broken), and technologies like SPF, DKIM & DMARC

  • Experience working with distributed systems

Tech Stack

  • We write code mostly in Ruby, Golang, Javascript

  • We run our services with a mix of Kuberntes and EC2 all running in AWS.

  • Our services use Elasticache/Redis, MySql (Aurora), SQS, Lambda, Kafka, and other AWS services.
